Collaspe of Manchester Pride

Manchester, UK – Manchester Pride, one of the UK’s most significant annual LGBTQ+ festivals, has initiated the process of voluntary liquidation, confirming months of financial anxiety and leaving a trail of unpaid debts.

The organisation’s Board of Trustees expressed “enormous sadness” in a statement, citing a combination of factors for the collapse: rising operating costs, declining ticket sales, the financial failure of an “ambitious refresh” of the event format, and an unsuccessful Euro Pride bid.

The Crisis and The Cost

The financial consequences are immediate and severe:

  • The charity’s staff team will be made redundant.
  • Details of artists, suppliers, and contractors who are owed money have been handed over to liquidators.
  • The organisation noted a positive economic impact of £104.8m since the pandemic, but ultimately admitted it was “no longer being financially viable.”

Capital Pride London shared their sympathy and highlighted the complex financial demands of running major LGBTQ+ celebrations. A spokesperson stated:

“We are deeply saddened by the news from our friends at Manchester Pride. Delivering a Pride event requires a significant level of funding to ensure the health and safety of participants and supporters. We know that funding goes to allow for the inclusion of talent, both international acts and vital community groups. This situation underscores the immense financial pressure all large-scale Pride organisations are currently facing.”

Despite the liquidation of the organising body, the Manchester City Council has confirmed a Pride celebration will take place in the city next August, with the Council playing an active role in shaping the event’s future.
